but later on in its life. Taking on the responsibility of a dog means making sure that you have the means to care for it and the desire to do so for the dog’s entire life. Labradors can live up to 15 years, so if you get the dog as a puppy, it will be a part of your life for a long time to come.

After you have gone through all of the potty training and other puppy training, you should have a reasonably well behaved dog. However, you still need to monitor behaviors. Depending on how you interact with your dog, it may pick up habits, even at an older age. Keeping your dog in line can become a full-time job, especially if you leave it alone for longer periods of time. Nipping bad behaviors as quickly as possible will ensure your dog remains well behaved.

Black Labradors also can become quite large. In general, a male can weigh up to 75 pounds and a female up to 70 pounds. However, it is easy to feed your Labrador too much, thus making your dog overweight. Just like people, when a dog is overweight, the likelihood of health problems increases. Keeping your dog at a healthy weight is important to its overall health. Getting your dog on a set feeding schedule can help prevent feeding it too much.

Regular veterinary check-ups are another integral part to dog ownership. Keeping your dog updated on its vaccinations will ensure the health of your dog. For instance, your dog will need a rabies vaccine every three years after the first couple of doses. It will also require heartworm tests, fecal exams and a distemper shot annually. If you board your dog, the bordetella vaccine is also required.

Taking care of a black Labrador is a big responsibility for everyone involved. Not only will you have to feed it, brush it and let it outside on a regular basis, but you must provide additional care. You must monitor the dog’s habits to avoid behavioral issues as your dog ages. You must also help your dog avoid becoming overweight and developing related health problems. One way to do this is through routine vet visits and vaccinations.
